CONTAMINATED WATER

Solutions for Contaminated Water

PFOS & PFOA

Two water contaminants that have been in the news recently are perflorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). These substances were originally manufactured as surface protectors (think Teflon) and also had industrial applications.

However, it’s since been discovered that PFOS and PFOA contaminated the environment near the industrial areas where they were produced and used. As a result, particles exist in the air, the ground, and, unfortunately, in surface and groundwater.

While the health risks of these chemicals are not entirely known, some studies have shown potential connections to conditions like:

  • High blood pressure
  • High blood cholesterol
  • Growth and learning abilities in children
  • Certain types of cancers

It is important to note that these are all potential effects and that studies continue to look at what impact these substances may have on human health.

At Mallard Plumbing and Mechanical, we know how big the PFOS and PFOA contamination issues are in our community, and we want to be part of the solution.

Handling PFOS and PFOA Contamination

It is possible to filter PFOS and PFOA out of your drinking water, but it takes more than a filter in a pitcher or your refrigerator door to get the job done. While these water filters can remove heavy metals, chlorine, and other chemicals, PFOS and PFOA can pass right through.

Instead, you’ll probably need a more advanced filter to get the job done, one designed to capture more particles and remove them from your water system. Here are the two most common options:

Reverse Osmosis

In a reverse osmosis system, water gets pushed through a semipermeable membrane, which catches most of the contaminants in your water. Reverse osmosis systems effectively remove PFOS and PFOA, and while they may cost more than other filtration options, they provide reliable filtration and fit just beneath your sink.

Activated Carbon

In an activated carbon filter, water is forced through a filter made of small pieces of carbon, which have been altered—or activated—to become porous. As water passes through the filter, contaminants get trapped in the pores of the carbon, leaving pure water to flow to your taps. While these filters are less expensive, they are not as effective as reverse osmosis filters.
